Interviewing Strategy Clues to Uncover Corporate Culture

Interviewing Strategy Clues to Uncover Corporate CultureInterviewing Strategy - Clues to Uncover Corporate CultureSee the corporate culture from the inside. I often remind my clients that when they are vorstellungsgesprching for an open position, they are interviewing the employer as much as the employer is interviewing them. By paying attention to the subtle clues in the office environment, job binnenseekers can gain a better perspective on the culture of the company or division and make more informed decisions about how theyll fit. Here are a few tips to help you size up the work environment of the company you are interviewing with.1. If possible, schedule your interview early in the morning, late in the day or during lunchtime. When you arrive, look around and see who else is there at that time. If you have an early morning or early evening appointment and the office is packed, chances are that the culture is one that expects long hours. If you interview during lunch and everyone seems to be eating at their desks, that could be a clue about the culture of the organization. If you are interviewing with a company that has a company parking lot, observe how full the lot is during ansicht hours to determine if late nights or early mornings are part of the culture of the entire organization.2. Ask to do a walk-through of the office. If you have made it to the second round of interviews, consider asking to see the office space. This allows you to canvass the physical space, but again gives you important clues about the office culture. Is the setup cubicle-style, big open spaces, windowed offices or a lot of closed doors? Does the space appear clean and well maintained, and feel like a place where you would feel comfortable and safe?3. Make small talk with the receptionist. This is important for several reasons. Many hiring authorities ask the receptionist his impressions of candidates who come in to apply for jobs. Make sure his first impression of you is positive. Through your conversation, you may gain valuable tidbits of information or see firsthand what types of people come through the reception area and how they interact with each other.4. Note any interruptions during the interview.Again, this could be a sign of what its like to work in that particular environment. Did your interview start on time or were you kept waiting? Is the interview conducted in a quiet environment behind closed doors? Does the person interviewing you interrupt the flow of the meeting to take phone calls? Does the interview end abruptly due to some sort of office crisis? While there are some hiring authorities who stage interruptions to see how you deal with them, I truly believe that for the most part these are not planned. Instead, this can be indicative of the departments culture or the hiring managers style.5. Observe preferred communication styles. How were the interview and follow-up meetings arranged? Were they set up by e-mail, phone or snail mail? Does th e company prefer one-on-one or group interview formats? Did the hiring manager give you any technical tests or assessments as part of the interview process? By observing the different ways companies interview and gather information, job seekers can begin to uncover how information is managed and validated by members of the organization.Of course, no interview scenario is perfect, and Im not suggesting that you penalize a company or hiring authority if a glitch occurs during the interview. But it is important to observe the rhythm of the office and factor that information into your decision. What have you observed during your interviews, and how has that information influenced your feelings about a company or a job?

What to Know About the Aviation Safety Action Program

What to Know About the Aviation Safety Action ProgramWhat to Know About the Aviation Safety Action ProgramThe Aviation Safety Action Program (ASAP) is a voluntary reporting program in which airlines and other Part 121 operators team up with the FAA to enhance flight safety. The goal of ASAP is to detect problems and safety hazards in flight operations before those problems cause an accident. Anonymous Reporting In the ASAP program, airline employees can submit anonymous, voluntary reports without fear of being reprimanded by their employer, and without fear of being legally implicated by the FAA through their report. Reports remain anonymous and can be paired with data from flight recorders to analyze the entire scope of the situation.? For example, if a pilot witnesses or flies an unstable approach, he can submit an ASAP report. The report will include information about the event which could be valuable to the flight operations department. If there are many unstable approaches r eported into a single airfield, for example, the airline can issue guidance or warnings to its pilots, change their policies regarding approaches into that airport to reduce the risk of error for future pilots, and inform the FAA or any unsafe operational hazards in that particular airspace. Years ago, before ASAP programs came along, pilots were reluctant to share information like this for fear of being disciplined or penalized for their actions. With many pilots and institutions on hauptplatine with the ASAP program, safety reports have become more common, giving the FAA and air carrier operations data needed to assess risk and prevent accidents. With data from onboard flight recorders, air carriers can also analyze actual aircraft data to monitor trends, flap or gear over-speed events, overweight events, etc. This program, called FOQA (flight operational quality assurance) at some airlines, complements the ASAP program. It gives the airline another method of finding and fixing pr oblems before they occur, and, more importantly, before an accident occurs. How It Works First, safety data collection methods and program details are agreed upon by the FAA and the carrier involved. An MOU is created to define the scope of the program between each party.Employees and company personnel are trained in how to use the system best to ensure privacy, anonymity, and safety. An event review committee (ERC) is formed, which consists of at least one member from each party (the carrier, the FAA and potentially a pilot union, etc.)An ASAP manager (not on the ERC team) will review reports, enter data to be analyzed, and send appropriate reports to the ERC. The ERC will review reports, determine if there are problems or potential problems, and make recommendations. Which Reports Are Not Accepted Not all ASAP reports are protected from punitive action. Employees that show an intentional disregard for safety, purposefully and knowingly cause problems, or are involved in cri minal activity will be dismissed from the ASAP program. If necessary, the FAA will follow up with an independent investigation and legal action where appropriate. Participants That ASAP program initially had its share of troubles, with airlines backing out, citing trust issues between the companies and its pilots. Still, at least 95 air carriers were involved in the ASAP program. Many of those airlines have also extended their ASAP programs to maintenance personnel, dispatchers, and flight attendants.

The resume categories are1. Reverse Chronological Resume Format 2019 (Standard resume format 2019)Imagine a timeline starting from now and dating back to the beginning of your education with all your major achievements and information listed along with important dates. Essentially, that is what a reverse chronological resume format 2019 is.To make it more clear, lets look at a sample reverse chronological resume format from Hirations Resume BuilderTake a look at our resume format 2017 examples along with our popular resume template 2017 catalogue.Sections on the Reverse Chronological ResumePersonal Contact DetailsProfessional SummaryKey SkillsProfessional ExperienceInternshipsEducationAdditional SectionsAs you can see in the resume image, all the dated sections have been arranged in a reverse chronological order starting from the most recent experience to the education of the candidate.PROSATS FriendlyThe Reverse Chronological resume format 2019 is the industry standard when it comes to resumes and is extremely ATS friendly. This means that by using this format youre kind of guaranteeing that all the information on your resume will be correctly parsed by almost any Applicant Tracking SystemRecruiter FriendlyBeing the most widely used resume format 2019 in the industry it is regarded to be the best resume format 2019. You can be sure that every recruiter will recognize the reverse chronological resume format 2019.Coherent and easy to createWhen it comes to making your resume in this format, the process is pretty simple. You simply have to create a time line of major events in your career and expand upon them in your resume.Additional Weight to your most recent work experienceThe emphasis in a reverse chronological resume format 2019 is laid upon your most recent experience, followed by the experience before it, and so on. This gives you an opportunity to highlight your achievements at the peak of your career (which is now). This enables you to prove your current worth to your potential employer.CONSDoesnt titel gaps in careerIf you have large gaps in your professional career, the reverse chronological format w ill expose them to the recruiter. Because of the emphasis laid on dates, the ATS may also deem you unfit for the position (if you lack relevant work experience).Looks bad for frequent job switchersIf youve switched a lot of jobs in a relatively short period of time, a lot of companies will be listed on your reverse chronological resume. This signals to the employers that you might not stick with their company as well.2. Combination Resume Format 2019 (also called Hybrid Resume Format 2019)As the name suggests, the Combination or hybrid resume format 2019 is a combination of the reverse chronological resume format 2019 and the functional resume format 2019(described in the section below). The combination resume format 2019 allows a candidate to present their skills with actual evidence from their professional experience and achievements. So essentially, points on the resume are grouped based on the skills that they highlight. This adds a lot of value to the resume since now the recruit er not only has a snapshot of the skills the person possesses, but they can actually see how the person employed those skills to create value for the organization.Tip While grouping or bucketing points under headers/skills, remember to quantify your achievements as much as possible. This will help the recruiter differentiate you from a candidate who has not represented how much value they contributedExample ? Executed the brand promotions publicity for numerous brands ? Executed the brand promotions publicity for national international markets leading to vol. improvement of 15% in 2 yearsHere at Hiration, we employ two types of combination formats for our clients based on the number of years of experience that they possess and their industry.Combination Resume Format-1 (Grouping inside Professional Experience)This format is exactly similar to the reverse chronological resume format 2019 apart from the fact that in the Professional Experience section, the points are grouped by the sills that they represent. Here is an example of this type of combination resume format 2019You can clearly see in the image how resume points have been grouped in the professional experience section under relevant skills. This allows the recruiter to quickly find relevant skills (required for the job) and scan the relevant points only.If you are smart enough to tailor your resume to the job description, you can easily direct the attention of the recruiter to where you want. This is the biggest advantage of using this resume format 2019, making it the best resume vormat 2019 available todayCombination Resume Format-2 (Grouping in Summary of Skills section)This format extracts all your achievements and high points in your career to create an entirely separate section called Summary of Skills or Summary Skills. behauptung points are then grouped or bucketed under key skills that they exhibit. This resume format 2019 replaces the traditionally used summary to create a more powerful snap shot of your career which is again highly targeted for the job you are applying to.Heres an examplePROSATS friendly, Recruiter friendlyBoth the combination resume formats have all the advantages there are to the reverse chronological format since they employ the same dated sections. So basically, they are ATS friendly, recruiter friendly and are well recognized by recruiters and organizations.Hides Gaps in EmploymentAdditionally, the combination format can be wisely used to draw the recruiters attention to skill based achievements that youve gathered over the years to mellow down the effect of gaps in your employment history.Tackles the aufgabe of frequent job switchesEven if you are a frequent job switcher, you can aggregate resume points across jobs and group them under skills to exhibit your expertise (in combination format-2).CONSMore Time ConsumingWell, since the pay off is high, the time taken to develop a combination resume increases since you have to do the additional work o f grouping points under common skills.Tip Reduce your effort and use pre-filled templates on our resume builder to create your resume in combination resume format 2019.You can also take inspiration from our resume format 2017 examples and our popular resume template 2017 catalogue. Not suitable for early stage professionalsIn case of early stage professionals, they might not have enough points to group under relevant skills. In such as case, the grouping does not make sense and it is better to go with the reverse chronological resume format.3. Functional Resume Format (Skill based resume)The functional resume format is on the other extreme of the reverse chronological format. Only the professional experience headers are listed in this resume format 2019 without any details of the actual work done.Instead, a separate section is created in which points are grouped under relevant skills. While this is recommended by some resume experts for people who have gaps in their employment histo ry or for people who have changed their jobs a lot, we at Hiration do not recommend using this format.Recruiters find the most value if they can see your career progress and how you have evolved as a professional. The functional resume format 2019 does not display your skills and points under the relevant work experience and hence, is not usually accepted by both ATS as well as recruiters. You can read more about it in the Pros and Cons section.Meanwhile here is an example of the functional resume format 2019PROSHides employment gapsThe functional resume is a skill based resume format 2019 can be used by candidates to focus on skills and totally avoid the work history.Tackles the problem of frequent job switchesSince the complete focus is on points grouped by skills, it helps to mask the job hopping trait of the candidate.CONSNot parsed by Applicant Tracking SystemsThe functional resume format 2019 is not parsed by most ATS. Since an ATS looks for points under the relevant work expe rience, it is unable to correctly read the points in this format.Seems fishy to recruiters and employersThe functional format raises suspicions in the minds of the recruiters that the candidate is trying to hide something. It is not a well accepted resume format 2019.So these were the 3 different types of resumes. Which one are you going to use?Read on to discover your ideal choice as the best resume format 2019.You can also move on directly to our resume templates on our resume builder.Which is the best resume format 2019 for you? Finally this is the part which youve been waiting for. Just look at the section below to see under which category you ding and choose the best resume format for your resume accordinglyStude nts Resume FormatWell if youre a student, you dont have a lot of professional experience. Youre probably thinking what can you write on your resume? Which format should you choose? The best resume format 2019 for you is the reverse chronological resume format 2019. Youd always have your extra-curricular and co-curricular achievements that you can showcase on your resume. Moreover, if youve done any kind of voluntary work or internships, they can take the spot of your professional experience. Just ensure that you display your work experience by tailoring it to the job youre looking for. Focus on the skills the recruiter is looking for.Experienced Resume Format 2019Entry Level ProfessionalsIf youre making an entry level resume, again, the reverse chronological resume format 2019 should be your choice. Since you would not have a lot of professional experience, it would be difficult to group your resume points into skills. So, creating a combination resume would be difficult for you.Mid L evel ProfessionalsChoosing a resume for a mid level professional is tricky. It really depends on the work you have done and the kind of skills you have accumulated over your career.Lets say you have learned a lot of skills and you have the resume content to show for it. In this case, you should go ahead with a combination resume format 2019.In case youve specialized and focused on a specific area, you should go for the reverse chronological resume. That way, you can really show potential employers how youre progressed over the years.Senior ProfessionalsAt Hiration, we almost always suggest our senior clients to go with the combination resume format 2019.You need to showcase your skills and validate with them the work that you have done. You need to modify each resume that you send out based on the job description. Highlight the skills that are most relevant to the job that youre applying to.A note on Functional Resume Format 2019While some people suggest that functional resume forma t 2019 is good for certain professionals, we strongly recommend that you do not use it. A functional resume format 2019 does more harm than good for your job application. The table below compares the three resume formats with each other. Just...no.Start off with your name in a text size larger than all other sections so that your most distinguishing feature on that piece of paper stands out.Mention your contact details, email id location.Go for a professional email id and not something like princess_jeangmail.com or sam_samuraigmail.comMention your current loca tion. If you are willing to relocate, you can mention the same either at the end of your resume or in your cover letter.Step 2 Summary/ObjectiveIn case you are an entry-level professional, you can go for an Objective statement instead of a Professional Summary sectionFor all other sections, you can go for a crisp Professional Summary section detailing the skills that you possess and how you plan to use that for resolving organizational issues and achieve company goals.Make sure that the summary is crisp and does not exceed 4-5 linesTry to derive a cause-effect relationship in each point in the summary. Dont just mention your achievements from your previous profiles - rephrase them to convince the recruiter how the skills that went into those achievements are transferrable and can be used for the benefit of the organizationStep 3 SkillsDepending on your profile and industry, Skills will broadly come underManagerial/Professional Skills Hard skills relevant to your target job profileTe chnical Skills No sector is immune to technology. You can use this section to list out your proficiency in online tools, software, methodologies, techniques, programming languages, etc.Soft skills non-professional abstract skills like communication, problem-solving, etc.Prioritize your professional skills over soft skills. The JD is your most accurate source to understand the skills which the recruiter is looking for.Step 4 Professional ExperienceAlign the company and profile to the left and date/location to the right. Its the industry norm for most single-column resumes and recruiters usually look for them this way.Start off with your current/last-held profile (reverse-chronological resume)Mention a one-line description for all the companies where you have workedUse crisp bullet points starting off with action verbs and bold important phrases/wordsGroup similar points together and assign sub-headings to them for greater impactDo that for all the work profilesStep 5 EducationList yo ur most recent qualification first to include the university, college, major/minor and time periodMention your GPA only if its 3.5 or aboveIf its been more than 3 years since your graduation or if your GPA is less than 3.5, you can skip your GPA altogetherProvide details of academic projects that you completedStep 6 Additional SectionsAdditional sections can include Training, Certifications, Publications, Extra-curricular Achievements, Hobbies/Interests, etc.You can include information pertaining to proficiency in languages in this sectionWhile listing out your hobbies, try to align your interests along the lines of what might be relevant for the recruiterTry to quantify your interests and achievements. Merely mentioning travelling or music as a hobby adds no value to your resume whatsoeverStep 7 Fonts, Margins SpacingGo for sans-serif fonts (Arial, Verdana, Trebuchet MS, Century Gothic, Calibri, Lucida Sans, Tahoma, etc.) over serif fontsMost ATSes are unable to process serif font s - hence, sans serif fonts are your best betMake sure that the font size is not smaller than 10 and not larger than 12 (for the section points and not section headings)Formatting legibility of the text cant be compromised in the quest to reduce a resume to 1 pageMake sure that you leave a minimum of 1 inch margin on all sidesBefore you send across your resume, print it out to see how it would look on paperKeep the spacing single-spaced for your resume, with a line break after each sectionKey TakeawaysThere cant be a universal resume format 2019 ideal for everyone. Resume formats depends on two key factors - your career trajectory and the job role you are targetingResume format 2019 is not a way for you to hide your career gaps or inadequacies. Its always better to be upfront about the same rather than use the best resume format 2019 to disguise itQuantify all your achievements and make sure that they are clearly visible across all your profilesPay special attention to font, font s ize, margin and spacing. Theres no use slogging over a resume for days only to have it rejected because the spacing rendered it illegible.Use standard sections highlighted above because ATSes are programmed to scan them. Trying to be quirky by replacing the Professional Experience section with something like Career Graph or Work Story will only jeopardise your chances.Still have more doubts around the ideal Format for your Resume? How to achieve your 10-year plan in the next 6 months

How to achieve your 10-year plan in the next 6 monthsHow to achieve your 10-year plan in the next 6 monthsHow much time does something really take to accomplish? Before answering that question, a better question is How much time do you actually have?Once youve answered that question, youll then be able to ask Where is all of your time going?Only then can you determine how long something really needs to take. How much time do you have? The average month has 720 hours (30 days X 24 hours). If you slept 8 hours per day (8 hours X 30 days = 240 hours), youd have 480 hours left.If you worked 40 hours per week (40 hours X 4 weeks = 160 hours), youd have 320 hours left. However, as will be shown, working 40 hours per week is optional, but certainly not optimal. And definitely not necessary. In fact, in the knowledge-working world we live in, your best work will generally happen while youre away from work. As research has shown, only 16% of creative ideas happen while youre sitting at work. Most will happen while youre relaxing, commuting, traveling, spending time present with loved ones, etc.If you spend 2 hours eating per day (2 hours X 30 days = 60 hours), youd have 280 hours left. So, the question is, what are you doing with those 280 hours? If you spend those 280 hours listening to audiobooks, you could listen to approximately 45 books (average book being 6 hours).280 hours X 12 months = 3,360 hours what are you doing with those 3,360 hours? If you spend those 3,360 hours listening to audiobooks, you could listen to approximately 560 books (average book being 6 hours).Ladders is now on SmartNewsDownload the SmartNews app and add the Ladders channel to read the latest career news and advice wherever you go.Of course, listening to 560 audiobooks would probably not be the best use of your time. Listening to 100, though, would probably be life-altering.Of course, there are far mora powerful ways of learning than simply reading books. If you get stuck with one method of lear ning, you will certainly stunt your growth.Reading books should stimulate new ways of thinking and ACTING in the world. If youre not acting differently, youre not actually learning, and thus not changing. Your behavior is what shapes circumstance, confidence, personality, and relationships. You read for instructions and inspiration. You then immediately apply what you learn and adjust accordingly. If youre willing to fail fast, break things, and deal with problems (fruchtweinly people problems), you can then learn whats immediately relevant at that time. For fruchtwein people, learning has become an escape from doing. Filling your head with useless information is the opposite of hard-won wisdom and understanding, which can only happen via the application of knowledge and re-application based on experience in the real world. What do you do with your 280 hours?Until we can manage time, we can manage nothing else. - Peter DruckerIf you dont know you have a problem, it probably wont change .If you dont believe you have a problem, it probably wont change. If you cant admit you have a problem, youre living in denial. We all have problems. In todays society, were all addicted to something (probably many things)You cant purposefully change what youre unaware of. Hence, the need for education, experience, and accountability (to both self and others). If you track and are required to report something, youll become heavily conscious. If there are immediate consequences to not performing, performance will raise even more. The moment of awakening happens when youAcknowledge to yourself that you have a problemOpenly admit you have a problemBegin seeking out information and helpGet accountabilityCreate an environment that facilitates your desire to changeBegin investing in more healthy alternatives and solutionsWith that said, lets take a look at your current use of time. WHERE IS IT ALL GOING???To be completely honest, you have no idea where its going. Thats because youre unconsc ious of where its going. The only way to become conscious is to begin tracking your use of time. Which for most people isnt fun. Its hard. Its a chore. So you give up after 13 days. For example, research has found that most people look at their smartphones around 100 times per day (Im sure its at least double that). Yet, most people BELIEVE they look at their phone only about 3040. So, at least half of those times looking are mindless and unconscious. The difficulty with todays environment is that its heavily trigger-laden. We are so used to being on technology and being distracted that its hard for us to imagine being fully AWAKE and present for long periods of time.Thats got to change if you want to start achieving your 10-year plans in the next 6 months. The idea of achieving such big goals in such a short time might seem totally crazy and unrealistic to you. However, if you stick with me through this post, youll realize that its actually VERY doable. Its not doable though, if you con tinue operating with the same mindsets and approaches youve been accustomed to.You absolutely cannot achieve things 10X or 20X faster if youre distracted on social media even one hour per day. Why?Because thats a very low-level use of time. Recovering and resting and playing for several hours per day is GREAT Its stimulating and fulfilling and leads to growth and deepening of self and relationships.Yet, on the statistics, the average person spends between 38 hours on the internet every day.How much of that time is deliberate, purposeful, and goal-oriented?When was the last time you got on the internet for a specific purpose, and then got off when that purpose was complete? The internet is more distracting and hard to evade than a Las Vegas casino. When was the last time you had a full day where you ate exactly what you wanted, without impulsively grabbing something like sugar, carbs, or caffeine out of habit? These examples are only to show how unconsciously we generally live.If you can t say what exactly you ate yesterday, and where you spent every moment of youre time, youre probably less healthy and less productive than you think.SoHow regularly do you sleep 8 hours per night?Do you go to bed and rise the same time each night?Do you unplug for technology and screen-time 6090 minutes before bed? When are your most optimal hours for mental and creative work? Do you do your most important work during those optimal hours? (by the way, for most people, its during the first 3 hours of their day, and just before bed). How much time do you spend with your family and friends without having your smartphone on your person? What are the most meaningful activities you do with your friends and family? How regularly do you do those activities? When was the last time you did those activities? What are your current goals for 2018?What are your current goals for Quarter 2 of 2018?What are your current goals for May of 2018?What are your current goals for THIS week? Are those goals stret ching you? What if you only had 3 months left to live? Could you accomplish your 2018 goals during those 3 months? My guess is, that you probably could. Of course, if you only had 3 months left to live, you might re-assess those goals. Youd probably realize that many of those goals are brainwashed into you by cultural norms. If you only had 3 months left to live, what would your goals be?Who would you reach out to?What EXPERIENCES would you seek to have? What unfinished geschftliches miteinander would you get done? What if you only had 6 months left to live?Nothing will fill your heart with a greater sense of regret than lying on your deathbed knowing that you did not live your life and do your dreams. - Robin SharmaIs it possible to actually live with a deathbed mentality?Of course it is.But the stakes need to be high enough for you.You need to actually VALUE your time, and to appreciate the brevity of your time on this planet. In order to properly value your time, you needA belief syst em about the purpose of your existence (If you have more than 3 priorities, you have none - Jim Collins). You cant have priorities if you dont have a value-system.A belief about how should you be using your timeA desire to live and learnA disregard for how (most) people perceive you. As Allen Carr said in his extremely important book, THE EASY WAY TO CONTROL ALCOHOL I would define cowardice as failure to act as my conscience dictates, because of fear of physical injury or ridicule.A willingness to continue learningA goal youre striving to accomplish (a mission or purpose that gives you something to dedicate yourself to)If you have a true goal, something that is extremely valuable to you, and that you believe to be very important, ONLY THEN can you begin to properly value and use your time.If you dont have a guiding purpose, youll be aimless with your time. As Ryan Holiday has said, This is a fundamental irony of most peoples lives. They dont quite know what they want to do with the ir lives. Yet they are very active.Very few people can optimize their time because very few people are clear onWhat they believeAnd what they should do because of that beliefAnd how to most effectively accomplish that beliefOnce you know what you believe you should do, then your next task is toGet really, really good at learning and filtering through informationGive yourself a very short time-lineUse your most important time, every single day, for moving toward your goalsRemove everything from your life that hinders you from achieving your goals. From a holistic perspective, taking lots of time OFF is actually key to productivity. Your best ideas will happen while youre away from work. Your motivation to succeed will be heightened if you have deep and meaningful relationships with friends and family. Your thinking and creativity will be better if you exercise daily. From an essential-perspective, you want to have lots of stimulating, stretching, entertaining, and beautiful areas of your life. However, none of the areas of your life will be optimized if you dont focus. Most people are distracted while they are at work and distracted while theyre home. Most people dont see a reason to eat healthy. Most people dont see a reason to evaluate the quality of everything they put in their mouth and in their heads. But when you know your time is limited, you begin to ask much harder questions. You begin to be a lot more honest with yourself and with others. Those things which were invisible to you now become very apparent. If you had 6 months to live, how much of that time would you spend on Facebook? If you had 6 months left to live, would it be difficult to wake up at 5 AM?Whats the difference? Why would it be easy to wake up at 5 AM and stay off Facebook if you only had 6 months left to live?Honesty.Brutal honesty.Thats the difference.Youd be far more honest with yourself about whats important to you.Would it be hard to give up a badeanstalt habit if you only had 6 months le ft to live? Probably not.Would it be hard to drop everything you dont love and focus exclusively on what matters?Would it be hard to find your voice or market your ideas? Not at all. If you believed you were doing something very important, youd shout from the rooftops. You wouldnt hold back and restrain for fear of what others think.Youd get to work.Short-term experiments can helpTim Ferriss doesnt set long-term goals (at least, thats what he claims). Instead, he pursues short-term experiments. The reason he pursues short-term experiments is because he doesnt seek happiness, but instead, excitement.I think another reason Ferriss pursues experiments is because he understands the value of time. Hes learned how to optimize his time. He knows how to set goals and achieve them quickly. He knows how to surround himself with a tribe of mentors. Hes set his life up to live on his own terms. Therefore, hes willing to take risks.Hes willing to experiment, to try new things, and to fail.Hes wil ling to pursue things that excite him. Hes willing to do something even if he doesnt know where its taking him.Importantly, Ferriss isnt living this way BECAUSE he has freedom of time and money. Rather, he has freedom of time and money BECAUSE he operates this way. When you have a short timeline, and something meaningful youre pursuing with vigor - you learn a lot. You adapt. You face problems in real-time and deal with those problems in real time. You learn only what you MUST learn. You BRUTE-FORCE learn in a hostile and immersive environment.Pulling it all togetherHow can you achieve your 10-year plan in the next 6 months? - Peter ThielHow do you achieve stuff 10X or 100X faster than muster? You must have something that drives youYou must operate with a deathbed mentality and not undervalue your timeYou must be willing to experiment and fail continuallyYou cant be a coward, which means you go against your intuition because you fear what others think (the scientific definition of cou rage means you deliberately confront risks to achieve a noble goal)You need to be an intense and wise learner, which means you get the best information from the best resources and apply immediately what you learnEven if you have a full-time job and 3 kids, you can achieve your 10-year plan in the next 6 months. You just need to start FINDING time to match toward your dreams. If you have less time, you actually need to be more bold. You need to learn faster. You need to reach out to the right people quicker. You need to put your work out there and face an audience immediately. If you start doing all of unterstellung things, youll get feedback. And thats all failure is. Failure is feedback.Without feedback, you wont know what to do. Once you get feedback, the next move becomes glaringly obvious.Get feedback. Once you do, youll stop putting up with petty stuff. Youll start treating people differently. Youll actually look them in the eyes. Youll actually listen. Youll express love and interest. Youll lift those around you.And youll stop dealing with stuff that no longer makes sense. Youll act with far more purpose, persistence, and boldness.Youll put first things first. You will act on instinct and intuition, not impulse and addiction. When you start acting in accordance with your intuition, you develop confidence. Conversely, acting against your intuition can often produce short-term dopamine, and a long-term lack of confidence. If you want more confidence, start striving toward the life you want. Bye Bye KSAs! But Maybe Not So Fast...

Bye Bye KSAs But Maybe Not So Fast...Bye Bye KSAs But Maybe Not So Fast...Bye Bye KSAs But Maybe Not So FastCelebration TimeNov. 1st welches Federal Hiring Reform Day. The Resume Place Certified Federal Resume Writers and clients are celebrating the end of the Long Narrative KSAs as part of the federal application for US government jobs with a Bye Bye KSAs cakeWe are all happy to say goodbye to KSA narratives. Many job applicants were turned off from applying for federal jobs because of the requirement for the long narratives required as part of the application. The most popular KSAs are Ability to Communicate Orally, Ability to Communicate in Writing, and Ability to Plan and Coordinate. Many applicants have writers block and struggle to write about how they can communicate orally and in writing. We often hear frustrated jobseekers say to us, What do they want to hear? Of course I can talk and write.Has the Process Changed?Skeptical hiring reform news was reported in the Washington deutsche post dhl today by Ed OKeefe in his article Federal Hiring Changes Bring Hope, Skepticism for Application Process. According to the article, the status of Federal Hiring Reform among agencies is summarized as Officials have backed off the presidents deadline, cautioning that only some agencies are ready. The departments of Commerce, Defense and Veterans Affairs and NASA are in good shape, but others are working through reforms that could take years to complete, according to the Office of Personnel Management. Therefore, only SOME agencies have done away with the long, one-page narratives about the most typical KSAs.Its true. Here at The Resume Place, people are wanting to apply for federal positions with a simple resume and cover letter. But in most cases, the simple application isnt here yet.The KSA Challenge Lives OnEd OKeefe quotes Kathryn Troutman, President of The Resume Place Troutman cautioned, however, that all the reforms wont necessarily make the hiring process eas ier. And although KSAs have been eliminated in the initial application, agencies may use them later in the process, after the initial screening. Is the government just shuffling around the information and giving KSAs a new name? Seems like it, to Resume Place Certified Federal Resume Writers and Consultants. We are currently finding requests in the vacancy announcements for various statements about your skills, including competencies, narratives, essays, questionnaires, knowledge statements, quality ranking factors, selective placement factors, specialized experience, and accomplishment record examples.Occupational Questionnaires are leise a consistent part of most federal job applications. These questionnaires include multiple-choice, Yes/No questions, and, occasionally, essay questions. We are seeing essays in about 1 in 5 vacancy announcements.Additionally, Troutman said that some job postings still require KSA statements without separate narratives. People are very confused on h ow to put them in, where to put them, and what to do with them, she said. If an application requests a traditional resume instead of KSAs, she recommends including short versions of accomplishments within the resume that explicitly demonstrate the applicants knowledge, skills and abilities.Hot Tips on Todays KSAsEd OKeefes article points out People looking for work with the federal government often call Kathryn Troutman and her company, The Resume Place, for tips on writing the perfect federal job application. Here are a couple of tips from Kathryn Troutman on how to make KSAs still stand out in your resume, even if you they are not explicitly required to be written in an essay form1. Write a compelling cover letter to state your case. This is NEW as part of the federal application. You can now write and include a cover letter to state why you believe you will be the best candidate and highlight your accomplishments.2. Add this information to your resume competencies and accomplishm ents to prove your knowledge. The accomplishments can be 100 to 150 words instead of one full page. The accomplishments are critical to help you get Best Qualified for a position.3. KSAs and your Accomplishment Record will be critical for the Structured Interview. Because you do not have to write the narrative KSAs for the initial application, the KSAs will become your talking points and examples for your structured interview. Prepare at least 5 accomplishments that will demonstrate you have the knowledge, skills, and abilities to do the job. The hiring manager will be asking you to least 7 questions where you will give 5 to 7 examples of your past performance.Another Important Change Tighter Closing DatesWith Hiring Reform there are tighter closing dates, improved contact between you and menschlich resources, and faster hiring times. Open dates for submitting applications is SHORTER, so that the HR specialists can control the number of applications. Some closing dates are only 3 t o 5 days. Therefore, your federal resume must be written ahead of time, so that you are ready quickly to apply for the federal position.Ed OKeefe from the Post writes The prior process is already faster, said OPM Associate Director Nancy Kichak. From the time the president issued his memo telling us to get going, weve been going. The hiring process is now averaging about 110 days, down from 180, Kichak said last week. For More Help With YOUR ApplicationThe Resume Place, Inc. Stay Positive During Your Job Search, Part 2Stay Positive During Your Job Search, Part 2Ways to stay energized and keep your mind focused on the silver lining throughout your job search. In part one of this article, I shared with you three ways to keep your mind energized and focused on positive thoughtsRelive past winsIf you cant get out of it, get into itVisualize what you wantThis installment provides more tips on how to remain optimistic during your job search. And for 25 mora Career-Enhancing Dos, join Kirsten Dixson and I for an exclusive, complimentary Ladders.com Webinar on Friday, January 23 from 1200pm 100pm EST. Space is limited. Register today. To get you started, here are three critical tips to seeing the silver lining in your job search1. Anticipate and embrace change.Change is the only constant in the new world of work. Dont be hijacked by it. Get used to it, and get excited about it. If you view change as opportunity instead of threat, you alter your perspective and o pen yourself up to possibilities perhaps to things you hadnt even considered. Often, change brings with it serendipity and delivers options you had notlage even considered.I was speaking to a client who recently lost his job at a bank and he told me that once he got past the anger, sorrow and fear, he was excited about the infinite possibilities that just opened up. When he took the job, he had to leave LA, his favorite city, for the Pacific Northwest. He immersed himself in his work and never really made his new location home. Now, with a little severance package in hand, he realized that he is no longer tied to a city where he didnt feel comfortable. He saw that he could change where he lived, the industry he worked in and even the job function he held. How has your current job search opened up new avenues for you?Give some thought to motivational speaker, Brian Tracys idea You cannot control what happens to you, but you can control your attitude toward what happens to you, and i n that, you will be mastering change rather than allowing it to master you.2. Focus on strengths, not weaknesses. Its always to your benefit to apply your greatest strengths to the task at hand its absolutely essential when you are in the midst of a job search. When we lead from our strengths, we are more confident, attractive and successful. So as you take each step towards your new job, ask yourself how you can use your greatest strength to make each step of the process more successful. For example, if youre writing your career marketing tools and your greatest strengths are your quick wit and incredible sense of humor, think about how you can inject more humor into your resume or cover letter. If your greatest strength is your vast and diverse network, ask yourself how you can use your connections to find the perfect professional resume-writer who can paint your candidature to attract attention. When you inject your strengths into everything you do, you raise yourself and your cand idature to a new level.Whats your superlative and how will you apply it to all aspects of your job search? It helps to remember what Paul J. Meyer, author of success practices series, said, Enter every activity without giving mental recognition to the possibility of defeat. Concentrate on your strengths, instead of your weaknesses on your powers, instead of your problems.3. Remember Nietzsche. The nineteenth-century German philosopher, Nietzsches poignant advice (That which does not kill us makes us stronger) reminds us that we can endure a lot more than we believe we can. When I look back at the most difficult experiences of my life, I realize that they all led to incredible growth in confidence, self-awareness, strength and focus. I am who I am today more as a result of the challenges I faced than the successes I enjoyed. As painful as they were to go through, I wouldnt give up any of them. How has adversity made you stronger? If you will call your troubles experiences, and remember that every experience develops some latent force within you, you will grow vigorous and happy, however adverse your circumstances may seem to be, said John Heywood, an English poet and playwright.Know that in the future you will look at the current job search battle with a more affirmative view. And understand that whatever challenges you encounter or struggles you endure, they will all contribute to your confidence and your candidature for future opportunities.

15 real ways to make your kid feel independent

15 real ways to make your kid feel independent15 real ways to make your kid feel independentYour toddler still cant do much by himself - tie his own shoes or make himself breakfast. But tzu siche are actually quite a few things two-year-olds can do for themselves, and its important that they begin to take ownership of these tasks - however small - as it helps them understand the importance of being independent.Yes, there will be some tears and meltdowns associated with your childs pursuit of autonomy. But there will be even more cheers and applause as your youngster discovers he doesnt need Dad every time he has to use the bathroom or wants to play a game. Looking to encourage your childs sense of independence? Start here.1. Allow them to turn the page.A small gesture, but an important one Involve your toddler in story hour by having him turn the books pages. He can even hold the book as you read - the goal here is to simply make them feel like they are dictating the pace of the activity rather than sitting passively as you do it for them.2. Let them take the lead with potty training. Some kids catch on quickly. Other kids take their time learning the when, where, and how. The important thing is that you let them figure it out on their terms, and in their own time. Your job is to show them what to do (and repeat as many times as necessary), and cheer them on when they do it. Their job is to connect the dots between the urge to go and the place to go in. Using Pull-Ups Training Pants will help bridge the gap between these two concepts until theyve mastered it.3. Praise their efforts.Doing something on their own for the first time is exciting And while hovering over them is absolutely not the right approach (this is about independence, remember?), jumping in with a Thats amazing once the mission is accomplished (flushing the potty or throwing the wrapper in the trash) makes toddlers practically burst with pride at what theyve achieved.4. Have them eat like an adult.Youre not your kids line chef. That said, offering a variety of foods at mealtime doesnt just increase the odds that your toddler will find something she likes to eat, it also gives her that grown-up feeling of choosing what she wants for dinner, just like adults do. At the same time, you should give them some limited choices. For example Tonight we have two vegetable choices. Should we have peas or carrots? In phrasing it this way, you are taking away the bigger question (Do you want vegetables?) and replacing it with an either/or option makes your toddler feel like he is in control of his dinner choices. You are also giving him an opportunity to make decisions not just for himself, but for the whole family.5. Have them choose their own outfit.Getting dressed on his own is a major milestone, if only because it buys you a few extra minutes to get dressed yourself in the morning. Most kids wont master this skill until grade school, but you can plant the seed by asking him to de cide what outfit he wants to wear for the day.6. Have them help cook dinner. At this age, two-year-olds are obsessed with doing whatever it is that dad and mom do, whether thats folding the laundry, ironing a shirt, or chopping vegetables. None of that, of course, is appropriate for your toddler, but they can help by doing simple things Placing the chopped veggies in a salad bowl, for instance, or stirring the cake batter with a wooden spoon. Assign your kid a task that makes him feel like hes contributing to the family meal it drives home the idea that every person plays a small parte in the bigger picture.7. Forget about being perfect.Trying to do things for themselves is tough on toddlers. So tough that actually about half the tasks your toddler completes will bear no resemblance to your intended outcome. Thats OK. This is one time where the overused phrase its the thought that counts really is true.8. Give them control of the toy box. What comes out must go back in. Young children arent capable of complicated cleanups, but if they are able to remove all their action figures from the well-stocked bin on the floor, then they are also coordinated enough to put them back once playtime is over. Dont make it feel like a chore - crown them King and Queen of the Toy Box, and explain as rulers, they must make aya their loyal subjects do as they are told and return home after their adventures in the kingdom are over.9. Go halvsies. If he puts on his left shoe, youll put on his right one. If she pulls on her shirt, youll do the buttons. Encourage independence in a reluctant child by splitting the task at hand in half.10. Have them get their own snack Keep easy-to-open jars of pretzels, bowls of washed apples, and other healthy choices on a low shelf in your pantry that your youngster can reach. When snack time comes, tell to your toddler to retrieve a snack from the shelf. (You might follow him into the kitchen the first few times to supervise.) Kids derive real satisf action out of self-feeding.11. And clear their own plate.Rituals around umgebung and clearing the table are a great place to begin teaching kids that dinner doesnt just appear like magic - it is lovingly provided by someone doing hard work in the kitchen. Toddlers cant carry anything heavy or hot (or anything that will likely spill). But they can pitch in with bringing napkins, utensils, and non-breakable plates over to the table, and removing the items when the meal is finished.12. Ask them to draw you a picture.Or color in a shape from her activity book. While arts and crafts might not scream independence-building activity, the concept of making something is linked to the idea of autonomy (See what I can do?). Help your little Picasso shine by requesting drawings of dad, mom, and siblings, and celebrate like crazy when she delivers.13. Let them fight it out.If your kid gets into a squabble with another child at the playground, give them a little space to see if they can sort thi s out by themselves. They may only be a toddler, but they are starting to learn that other people have feelings, too, and not everyone thinks exactly the way he does about playtime or sharing toys. If the fight does not resolve, you can step in but still allow the kids to work together to find a solution. Ask each one for his side of the story, then repeat it back to be sure everyone hears what the other is feeling. Request each child think of a way to help his friend feel better about the situation. Try to implement their suggestions as best as possible, and move on.14. Put them in charge of the hamper.Hes not ready to vacuum and mop, but your toddler can contribute to keeping his space clean by placing dirty clothes in the kid-sized laundry basket in his room after he wears them. The important thing to emphasize is that this is your childs domain, and as the ruler of said domain, hell want to be sure everything is in its proper place. Keeping his room tidy isnt punishment, its a p rivilege that comes from being in charge.15. Let her brush her teeth.Youll fruchtwein likely have to follow up with a more thorough scrubbing afterward until around age four, but if you want to fast-track your kids sense of personal responsibility, let them apply the gel to the brush, and the brush to their mouth. Have them watch you first - especially the spitting in the sink part at the end. Then do it together facing the mirror, so you can check that all systems are a go.This article firstappeared on Fatherly.
